I've found a really cool club space near 12th Street BART in Jack London square. They would be willing to rent us the space for $2000 minimum drink purchase. The space has:

  • capacity for 350 (with a more compact dancing area).
  • a much better sound system.
  • two good projectors for talks.
  • is fully licensed.
  • would let is run a party from 9:30 PM until 1:30 AM -- finally a longer dance party!

The caveat, they'd like to see us move towards a monthly event. The good news is:

  • if we can get a good turn out, we could significantly reduce our costs from prior events.
  • we only signup to throw two events at a time (it's not a long commitment).

If we're going to give this a shot, I'd:

  1. like to minimize my own financial exposure.
  2. try to line up some good sponsors right out of the gate:

@jameswomack: could you ask Netflix to sponsor?
@nebrius: rdio?
@emilyrose: spark?
@bcoe @ceejbot @linclark @othiym23 npm?
@thealphanerd Famous?
@gsilk Nomic?

I'd also love to know who'd be willing to take some financial risk with me.

Do you have a pitch I can forward the events team at Netflix?

@jameswomack I think I'd pitch it as an opportunity to create a great community that pull together people in the software, music, and entertainment industries.

I'm picturing: wonderful tech talks, great guest performers, and a great chance to pull together likeminded creative people in our field -- also a great recruiting opportunity for business that fit within this venn diagram.

I think perhaps we should set our sights on trying to get enough sponsorship to run back to back monthly events, we could then evaluate if it provides enough value for the respective companies?

Can we call a meeting, maybe a Sunday afternoon, perhaps at Mikeal's boogaloo?

How does September 25th work for people?

FWIW JSConf EU is the 25th and 27th. I'll be out of town September 16th through 30th myself for it. Of course I'm not critical for running the event though 😃
