2015 highlights

• Global: Project starts, see blog post, with around 1M records from Quattroshapes, a compilation of authoritative national mapping agency data authoritative national mapping agency data by Nathaniel Vaughn Kelso sponsored by David Blackman at Foursquare circa 2013, as the basis for the first gazetteer records.
  • While the data is authoritative, coverage is mostly limited to USA, Mexico, western Europe, portions of eastern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, South Africa, Brazil, and Chile. Locality data is more available and original work based on Flickr and Foursquare checkin data mashed up with Where on Earth metadata, which allows coverage to expand to Canada, all of Europe (with some additional European Union data added in), Russia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, and India.
  • Administrative level 1 as region (below) States and provinces in orange; regions shown in red (imported later in 2016). Mix of national mapping agency and Natural Earth.
  • Administrative level 2 as county (below) Counties in bright blue; regions shown in dark blue. National mapping agency data.
  • Localities as locality (below) In yellow. In the USA this is the smallest unit of government with legal boundaries. For most other countries the localities here are informal parts of local administrative areas. Mix of national mapping agency, quattroshapes enumeration using foursquare checkins & custom data.
  • Neighbourhood level as neighbourhood (below) In purple. Informal (vernacular) usage sourced from original Quattroshape enumeration from geo tagged photos in Flickr using GeoPlanet hierarchy.

  • Quattroshapes gazetteer (below) In light purple (imported in 2017). Over 1 million administrative and populated places with around 800,000 having concordance between GeoNames.org and Yahoo! GeoPlanet WOE unique IDs. If polygon feature imported previously then QS point gazetteer's properties are appended to existing WOF records.
• Global: We added missing 1,542 global significant cities from Natural Earth, via pull request #876 – the other features were already in WOF and enriched with Natural Earth properties.

In this this post I will summarize Who’s On First’s key advantages, offer a comparative analysis of WOF and other open gazetteers, quantify our global coverage by placetype, offer score cards by country, dive into name localization, look at internationalization through the lens of disputed territories, and quantify geometry types and sources of those polygon and points, hold hands with and thank our sources, and invite collaboration.
