Rate Limits on StaticJsonRpcProvider

Are rate limited situations where the requesting client IP address gets temporarily banned on StaticJsonRpcProvider they properly handled?

If the client node provides an error code of 429, then ethers can retry if you use throttle settings like throttleLimit, throttleSlotInterval. The section in the docs is here.

Just a quick extra note; if the 429 includes a Retry-After header, that is honoured. Otherwise exponential backoff is used, with the provided parameters.

@ricmoo what will happen if Retry-After is actually provided?
Let's say I'm performing a await getBlock("latest") request and I get Retry-After. Then what happens?

1. Will it get stuck on the await until the time passed of the Retry-After header?
2. WIll it fail the request?
3. What happens if I make another request using the same provider instance that got the Retry-After before? Will it "know" it's still inside that Retry-After timeframe and fail/return undefined?
4. Is there any way to identify that we got a 429 error from the RPC server? I have my own internal logic and this would be great to know. And if I can also see the Retry-After header, even better

I'm finding it hard to find good examples on the subject and this discussion is the closest I found

Hi @zemse , where do these throttle settings live in v6?

I can't find out how to apply them to my JsonRpcProvider.

Found them - first param is a FetchRequest.

e.g.

const req = new ethers.FetchRequest("https://api.avax.network/ext/bc/C/rpc")
req.setThrottleParams({ maxAttempts: 3 , slotInterval: 100 })
const rpc = new ethers.JsonRpcProvider(req)

Default values look to be more than adequate:

const MAX_ATTEMPTS = 12;
const SLOT_INTERVAL = 250;

Hey, guys. The above seems to work fine as long as you don't make the json rpc static. Any clues on how to add throttling to a static json rpc?

const providerReq = new FetchRequest(rpcUrl)
providerReq.setThrottleParams(fetchRequestOpts)
const staticNetwork = Network.from(Number(chainId))
return new JsonRpcProvider(providerReq, staticNetwork, { staticNetwork, ...options })

If I remove the staticNetwork options, it's working great. Otherwise - it's disregarding the throttle options
