Describe the bug

the --set-config applicationmode=1 setting doesn't change anything, --get-config applicationmode always returns 0, so there's no way to make the playback menu accessible on the camera when connected to the computer.

Apparently Nikon changed the way that applicationmode is changed, and that appears to be fixed in this libgphoto issue gphoto/libgphoto2#589 , but has this change been made accessible to gphoto2's cli?

Name the camera
Nikon Z5

libgphoto2 and gphoto2 version
gphoto2 2.5.28.1
libgphoto2 2.5.31.1

The code should support it as-is currently, also checked the SDK ... it should work

Can you capture a debug trace perhaps?

gphoto2 --set-config applicationmode=1 --debug --debug-logfile=app.log

attach app.log here

also perhaps you need to change the cameramode aka "controlmode" setting instead.
