I have created a clean conda 3.12.2 env and installed nbdime==4.0.1.

I have then created a clean git repo, a and committed a notebook called a.ipynb. Now, after changing the notebook and running nbdiff-web a.ipynb

I get the error

Seems related to the latest jupyter-server. I can get it working with pip install 'jupyter-server==2.12.5'.

Just encountered the same issue on Linux, updating an old conda env using nbdime==3.1.1 (which didn't exhibit this) to nbdime==4.0.1 (context: old nbdiff-web was stalling on a big notebook; I wanted to try a newer version post #400 to see if any better).

Had no luck trying to roll back nbdime version alone (when I tried, striding releases, confirmed issue present in nbdime versions [4.0.0, 3.2.1, <gave up>])

Gave up as I spotted jupyter-server/jupyter_server#1392 enabling authentication by default: pinning only jupyter_server to v2.12.5 (version just before that auth PR went in) seems to give a workaround for now (ha, you've just pipped me to post @yan12125!)

Info for reproducing @ nbdime==4.0.1 (incl. lockfile)

How I created the conda env exhibiting login_url error:

Seems related to the latest jupyter-server. I can get it working with pip install 'jupyter-server==2.12.5'.

It fixed my problem. Thanks!

It looks like login_url setting is not getting passed for auth handlers in nbdime. For reference the jupyter-server passes:

"login_url": url_path_join(base_url, "/login"),

I think it should be added somewhere here:

Is login necessary for nbdime? I can get it working by adding 'allow_unauthenticated_access': True to the aforementioned settings dictionary:

When will this be fixed in the version of nbdime (4.0.1) installed by Brew on OSX (Monterey)?

Login is not necessary but authentication is necessary. Setting allow_unauthenticated_access to True will prevent jupyter-server from detecting insecure endpoints. This can lead to security vulnerabilities, so the suggestion from #749 (comment) should not be merged into the code base.
