High School Economics Interactive Activities

We're looking to create light-weight, simple, and easy to use interactive activities to go along with a subset of the lessons in our forthcoming edition of FOCUS: High School Economics. There are two types of activities outlined below: real-time simulations and online calculators.

Here are a few of our priorities to give you a sense of what we're thinking:

  • The technology-enhanced activities should remain true to the ink and paper activities included in the book. The ink and paper activities in the book were developed by economists and experienced educators, we want to make sure that whatever interactive activities we produce fit in with the lessons in the book.
  • The activities should use open web technologies and be responsive to different screen size (tablets in particular).
  • The activities should promote student collaboration and interaction over independent learning whenever possible.
  • The activities should be as lean as possible in order to allow teachers to make the best use of their instructional time with students. Admittedly, the simulations are a bit more involved than the calculators.

We went through the 27 lessons in the book and picked out the ones that we felt best lent themselves to having a digital interactive created to go alongside the lesson. I can send the full drafts along if you're interested. Basic summaries of each of the lesson are included below.

  • What are the target devices? Does this vary from activity to activity?
  • Reporting:
    • We recommend starting with one reporting mechanism shared across all activities. (Between e-mail, Google Docs, and custom database, our preference is e-mail.)
    • Have we correctly identified all the activities that require reporting (via the "reporting" label)?
  • What is the age of the target students? Is anyone available to interpet COPPA in the context of these applications?
  • An expected duration of each activity would be helpful in understanding how each should be built.
