the commandline operates in different modes:

some commands have submodes that slightly change the original behavior. for example the open command has the submode new window which opens a file in a new window instead of the current one.

clicking on the command name lists all modes and their shortcuts:

shortcuts for moving the commandline:

  • ^up|down move commandline up|down
  • ⌘up|down move commandline to top|bottom of window
  • ⌥up|down move commandline a quarter of window up|down

command history

each mode keeps it's own history.

press up to select the previous history item.
