This allows the docker container to run as a non-root user.

Pros:

  • Security best-practice (more details)
  • Flexibility to run as any user, as some applications and platforms policies require it and sometimes run containers as a random user id. (e.g. OpenShift, Kyverno, OPA, etc..)

Cons:

  • Docker image is 3 MB larger
